Modelling the compaction of plastic particle packings

چکیده
Soft particle materials such as some pharmaceutical and food products are composed of particles that can undergo large deformations under low confining pressures without rupture. The rheological textural properties these thus governed by both rearrangements shape changes. For the simulation soft materials, we present a numerical technique based on material point method, allowing for elasto-plastic deformations. Coupling latter with contact dynamics method makes it possible to deal interactions between particles. We investigate compaction assemblies elastic plastic deformations, is observed applied stress needed achieve high packing fraction lower when hardening small. Moreover, predictive models, relating fraction, proposed These models fit well our results. Furthermore, found evolution coordination number follows power law function beyond jamming hard packings.

Quantification of the heterogeneity of particle packings.
The microstructure of coagulated colloidal particles, for which the interparticle potential is described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verweg-Overbeek theory, is strongly influenced by the particles' surface potential. Depending on its value, the resulting microstructures are either more "homogeneous" or more "heterogeneous," at equal volume fractions. An adequate quantification of a structure's degr...
متن کاملInfluence of Compaction Condition on the Microstructure of a Non-Plastic Glacial Till
The influence of compaction water content on the structure has been well known forclayey soils, but has never been studied for granular materials. In this paper the structure of a nonplastictill and the effect of compaction moisture is investigated by means of water retention curvestudy, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests. The results show thatwhen compacted on...
متن کاملParticle shape effects on the stress response of granular packings.
We present measurements of the stress response of packings formed from a wide range of particle shapes. Besides spheres these include convex shapes such as the Platonic solids, truncated tetrahedra, and triangular bipyramids, as well as more complex, non-convex geometries such as hexapods with various arm lengths, dolos, and tetrahedral frames. All particles were 3D-printed in hard resin. Well-...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling of Dynamic Compaction in Dry Sandy Soils for Determination of Effective Print Spacing
Dynamic compaction (DC) is a widely used soil improvement method in dry and/or saturated soils. The design of DC treatment is usually carried out based on the past experiences and empirical relations. In order to clarify the ambiguities in DC processes, numerical modeling of DC in dry granular soils has been considered using a dynamic finite element code. Using the developed model, two design c...

We investigate the statistical geometry of inherent structures ~mechanically stable arrangements of particles generated by a steepest-descent mapping of equilibrium configurations to local potential minima! of liquid configurations of the shifted-force Lennard-Jones system, as an approach to elucidating mechanisms for the decay of metastable states. For a wide range of densities, including some...
